About

In 2012, Canada celebrated the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne. To honour this milestone, the Government of Canada collaborated with Canadian public and private sector organizations to fund an inspiring new scholarship initiative: the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships program (QES).

Launched in 2014, QES has activated a dynamic community of young global leaders that have created lasting impacts at home and abroad. The program has achieved this through international education, providing opportunities for discovery and inquiry and enabling professional experiences.

Scholarship recipients, called “Queen Elizabeth Scholars”, engage with communities, learn about cultures and create projects and actions that impact the world. They are part of a global network of Queen Elizabeth Scholars who share knowledge, exchange ideas, and collaborate on meaningful initiatives.

This particular project brings together scholars from around the world to research climate justice and democratic commons governance, in the context of an innovative ecological economics partnership. The project will fund doctoral students from LMICs to enable them to join the E4A program at York University and McGill University for 4 years while undertaking their PhD research; post-doctoral and early-career researchers from LMICs for one-year research trips to York or McGill in collaboration with the E4A program; Canadian and international graduate students’ research exchange trips; and associated participatory research, publication, and community-based knowledge mobilization activities in collaboration with LMIC universities and civil society organizations (CSOs).  All the participating scholars will undertake research internships in partnership with CSOs working in areas related to their research interests, so that their academic work has immediate relevance and applicability.  We will support not just research trips between Canada and LMICs, but also exchange trips among LMIC researchers and LMIC partner organizations.
